I began working with textiles more than 20 years ago when I discovered that this was my way of connecting with the world and contribute bringing more fantasy, inspiration and a smile to it. I live in a world of little people and awesome worlds, all born in my imagination. My art was shaped by a life full of experiences in two continents, Europe and South America (where I'm living now once more). My childhood was populated with an imagery of strange creatures born from the art of the Jesuit Missions of Argentina.

I draw my inspiration from my great love of nature and my ever growing library of drawings, photographs, and designs. I use fibres, materials, and colour to build unique collages. This very creative process allows me to explore the use of textiles, fibres, paint, embellishments and stitching. The purpose of my art is to create beauty and express my feeling and experiences with colour relationships, shapes, and linear movement. Artist's statement: I am a passionate fibre/mixed media artist who employs surface design techniques and incorporates unusual hand painted, hand dyed fabrics, paper, found objects, hand and machine quilting to depict landscapes and abstract art. Since 1984, we have been supplying shops and retail customers in North America with high quality, handcrafted clothing, jewelry, textiles, and paper. We import directly from small cottage industries in Nepal, including development projects working to improve the lives of Tibetan refugees and women. We have worked with many of our producer groups for over 20 years.

Our goal has always been to support work that enhances people’s lives and traditions. We work directly with the producers as a team, expanding each others’ talents and ideas. It is rewarding to work with such skilled artisans who enjoy what they do and to know that they realize a fair return for their work.

We are a member of the Fair Trade Federation, an organization dedicated to promoting respect and fair interaction, at all levels, between producers and consumers. We are also a part of the Green America Business Network with a listing in the National Green Pages. Denise is a past board member of the Fair Trade Resource Network working to educate North American’s about the benefits of fair trade. We are also co-founders, with Sita Gurung, of the Baseri Health Clinic in Baseri, Nepal. Fair Trade Weaving in Nepal

Mission: For those of you who are new to Ganesh Himal Trading we would like to give you a brief introduction to who we are and how we practice fair trade. We have worked with producer groups in Nepal since 1984. By assisting in product development, purchasing and importing these artisans’ products our goal has been to create mutually beneficial, long-term partnerships with low income, refugee and fair trade artisan groups in Nepal. The principles of fair trade are central to our philosophy and the way we do business. In 1998, four key international organizations created a widely accepted definition of Fair Trade:

“a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency, and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions, and securing the rights of disadvantaged producers and workers-especially in the South” (FINE, 1998)

As we look back over the past 25 years we are thrilled to see that the concepts of “fair trade” do work to bring economic, spiritual and cultural health to all of those involved. We have watched with humility as the producers we work with have done well and then reached out to others in need.

We have watched a country go from peace to civil war and seen the strength and resolve of our friends as they deal with even more adversity and again reach out to those who have been so tragically affected by this war. As we look to the future we hope to provide the producers we work with in Nepal with a more just and stable future, through fair trade and to educate more consumers about the need to support this movement for economic justice.

Finally, we hope to help more fair trade retailers in North America gain access to items that are practical and useful in our every day lives so that more fair trade outlets can become available to North American consumers. FANTASTIC FIBERS is an international competitive exhibition that seeks to showcase a wide range of outstanding works related to the fiber medium. In four years Fantastic Fibers has grown to a truly international competition/exhibition.

Fantastic Fibers 2012 is hosted by the Yeiser Art Center, Paducah’s Gateway to the Arts. Located in downtown Paducah, the Yeiser Art Center is a non-profit visual arts organization celebrating more than fifty years of serving the community through exhibitions and education throughout the Tri-State Region.

Last year’s Fantastic Fibers 2011 had over 400 entries submitted by 187 fiber artists from Canada, France, Japan, and Qatar, and from 23 US states. 58 works by 47 fiber artists were chosen for the exhibit.

Paducah is the home of the National Quilt Museum. The American Quilter’s Society Annual Show and Contest will be held in Paducah from April 25 to 28, 2012.

The competition/exhibition is open to all professional artists 18 years and/or over working in the field of fiber art. Contemporary and innovative works created with fiber as the primary medium are welcome. All work submitted must be original, completed in the last three years and not previously exhibited in a Fantastic Fibers exhibition. There are no size restrictions. A non-refundable entry fee $10 is required for each entry submitted for consideration with a maximum of five entries per artist. Entries must be submitted online by February 4, 2012.

Juror Luanne Rimel is an artist, curator, and currently the Director of Education Programs at Craft Alliance Art Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She holds an MFA in Fibers from Southern Illinois University and has taught numerous workshops and classes around the country. Rimel will award a minimum of $1,750 in cash prizes for this year’s exhibition.

I create my jewelry in Cyprus - the island with year round golden sunshine and a tropical climate.
This idyllic island of the Mediteranean is distinctive for its awe-inspiring natural beauty, extraordinary biodiversity, and fusion of traditions and peoples.

My inspiration comes from the heavenly scenery; sands of alabaster, silver, gold and ebony hug the shorelines, lapped by waves of turquoise. Brightly coloured shoals of fish hide amongst vibrant coral gardens of bubblegum hues, in curvy bays of salt-encrusted limestone, sea-polished granite and rugged volcanic rock - all set against a simply stunning backdrop of bloom - filled, lush forests. As dusk falls, the crimson-purple skies treat me to some of the most incredibly beautiful sunsets in the whole world.

Yes, weaving and hand bound books go hand in hand. The rhythmic flow of the shuttle from side to side mimics the rhythmic movement of carrying the threads along the spine of a beautifully constructed book. My weaving began in 1980 when I finished my work in museum studies, and instead of heading to a curator's workbench, I headed to the weaving studio, and I have stayed there ever since! My work in book arts stemmed from a life long love of reading. In 1985 I gave myself a gift of an art retreat with one of the foremost book artists in the world. I saw how inter-related weaving and the book arts were and I have never looked back.

In both weaving and book arts, I constantly look for new materials, new forms, and new ways to express my love of both. My work continues to change and evolve, but in my handcrafted products you will always find something you will love to use for a very long time.

My work can be found at WinterArts, a seasonal gallery of fine handcrafted items by local artists in the Memphis area. Artist's statement: Drawn by the colors and textures of yarns, I began weaving on a traditional floor loom in 1980. My early pieces included original design clothing and accessories woven from natural wool fibers. A move from New Jersey to Memphis in 2000 inspired a new direction in weaving. Natural cotton and silk, and more recently sustainable fibers such as bamboo and tencel became my fibers of choice. Not only do the fibers drape beautifully and feel luxurious, they also are easily replenish-able with little need for toxins to promote growth. My belief in stewardship of our Earth extends into my work with hand bound books as I often incorporate hand made paper from natural products.

The Judaic concept of hiddur mitzvah has always been a part of my artistic life. Literally, the Hebrew phrase can be translated as “to make a good deed beautiful”. The use of textiles with a thought toward repairing the Earth can be viewed as a good deed, and to create beautiful handwoven textiles fulfills the directive issued by hiddur mitzvah. As an artist, I believe that this concept can be applied to all manners of not only religious worship, but also by extension into one’s personal life.

A customer once described my hats as "flamboyantly historical". This perfectly describes my pieces. My work is created from thrift store purchases and vintage/antique fabrics and trims. I hand paint, bead and otherwise mangle these fabrics to create wearable art.

All of my hats have a vintage quality whether neo Victorian, Edwardian or roaring 20's inspired but are also completely modern. I always keep the "wearable" in wearable art.

There is a soft spot in my soul for old and worn items, especially textiles. I find great pleasure in recycling abandoned articles of clothing into new works of art. I have a special kinship with old woolens, particularly old sweaters, which I turn into felted wool through a fulling process of repeated agitation in hot, soapy water. The resulting wool felt is thick, luxurious, and available in all the rich colors which seem to find their way to me via thrift stores, yard sales and caring friends.

My household motto, passed down from my grandmother, through my mother, and now from me to my daughter, is waste not, want not. I find it very difficult to throw anything away because I can imagine a potential use for almost any object. My studio overflows with stuff waiting, ever so patiently, to be used. It can be overwhelming at times to have so much in the way of raw materials. I actually work best when I have a limited amount of materials to work with. Nonetheless, when I handle my many vintage textiles - velvet, silk, lace, wool - often incorporating found objects, metals, jewels, and antique buttons into the creative process, I am quite happily in my element.

The making becomes a meditation and I become lost in the process.

The outcome runs the gamut from small art quilts, to penny rugs, garlands, ornaments, flags, purses, pincushions, scarves, cuffs, small samples of sewn folk art, dolls, and so on. I never know what direction I’ll head for . . . it’s a mystery.

Artist's statement: I'd like to set dreams free - yours or mine. I'd like to create things which are so meaningful they may just break my heart, or speak to your soul. Through my work, I hope to know us both better ..... to become closer to my core truth, to meet you (and you, and you), to learn about and honor this earth we all share.

I am Nancy Zeller, shepherdess and natural dyer. I have co-owned and operated Long Ridge Farm since 1995 and have raised CVM/Romeldale sheep, the rarest breed of sheep in North America, since 2000. My sheep yield a fine wool of 26 microns or less, with a very defined crimp.

I offer a line of yarns I created using their wool along with other precious fibers. I also dye fabrics in accessory pieces as well as yardage.

My passion for natural dyeing began in 2005. I have never used synthetic dyes and plan to remain true to my passion. Through an ongoing process of combining classroom learning with experimentation I have succeeded in achieving rich, strong color from natural dyes and only two non-metal mordants.

My quest is ever-changing, challenging and exciting with regard to natural color and my work.

My studio is located on the farm and I am available by appointment.

Mission: Through a combined passion for raising my flock of CVM/Romeldale sheep and natural dyeing I am constantly exploring technique and innovation when appling color to cloth and fiber. Both my rarest breed of sheep and natural dyes face extinction so I am ever conscious of their protection and care. I am turning more to working with bio-regional dyestuffs and ways to coax their colors to my work.

I've always loved color and was trained as an abstract painter. But once I discovered Fair Isle and stranding techniques in knitting, a whole new world of creativity opened up to me.

My love of world travel has led me to study ethnic knitting motifs and their inter-connectedness through historic trade routes. After my first visit to Turkey I fell in love with both Ottoman and tribal textiles as well as the open-heartedness of the people. I love translating ethnic textile motifs into knitted patterns and experimenting with color. My other love is teaching knitting and encouraging the artist in each of us to come out and play.

Artist's statement: My goals are: to inspire other knitters to experiment with color and pattern to create their own unique designs; to translate traditional ethnic motifs into knitted patterns and publish them in a variety of media.

I am available to travel to teach workshops on Intro to Stranded Knitting, Designing your Own Vest, Interpreting Ethnic Motifs into Knitting Designs and Knitting a Turkish-inspired Stranded Hat. I can also work with your yarn to design sale-able knitting patterns.

In Memorium: TAFA Member Cindy Wills Dies of Cancer

In June, Cindy posted on her blog:

Sometime in 2007 I began keeping this blog. The idea was to share my recent creations without having to list each item for sale. I probably had hopes of doing something creative with it, too. April 6, 2011, I was diagnosed with cancer. My doctor referred to it as the nasty, weird kind of cancer. Since the beginning of April I have had 3 surgeries. I truly prefer to bring light and smiles into this world as enough of everything else already exists.

There were a couple more posts then, nothing. Nothing on her facebook page either. Cindy had become an online friend and I kept checking periodically to see how she was doing. Today I did a little more digging and was saddened to find her obituary, stating that she passed away in September.

Cindy was the youngest daughter of Bob Wills, the famous singer who is known for his Western Swing, music which I thoroughly enjoy. Cindy had started a group on facebook which posted Swing music regularly. Her dad is the one dancing around the stage:

I am so saddened by the knowledge of Cindy's passing. I find it distressing that there was so little about her on the web. Yes, our time here is short, but she made such an impact on me in such a short time that I would think her family and friends would have posted more about her on the web or alerted the rest of us who followed her on her blog and on facebook that she had died... Maybe they didn't have her passwords? My father recently said that is something I should do, keep a list of my online places and passwords so that if something happens to me, someone might be able to access my sites. Very true...

Biography

Surrounded by family and prayers, Cindy Wills Marcrum passed away on Monday, September 12 at 11:23pm. Cindy was born in Sacramento, CA on January 15, 1955. She was the youngest child of Bob and Betty Wills, mother of sons Austin and Aaron, and wife of Herschel (Rick) Marcrum.

Bob Wills (1905-1975) was the creative force behind the American music form known as Western Swing and, artist, Cindy Wills, was his daughter. She was born with the marvelous talents of an artist and produced beautiful works throughout her life. In 1999, her father was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Cindy traveled to New York City to accept the award. She served on the board of directors of the Bob Wills Heritage Foundation, Inc.and was dedicated to preserving her family’s legacy.

“I see my life and all the places I have lived as a colorful patchwork quilt,” she would say, “And whether I am creating portrait, landscape or modern paintings; hand-hooked wool rugs; stamp designs, or collages, my inspiration has always ultimately reflected at least a thread of that patchwork.”

In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made in Cindy's name to The Bob Wills Heritage Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 1945, Burleson, Texas 76097.

After many years of teaching and advising students on campuses including the University of Wisconsin and Stanford, budget cuts left me without a classroom. Finally, I could focus full time on my inherent artistic interests dyeing and weaving yarn.

I inherited the love of sewing from my Great-grandmother: she was a seamstress. At first I made toys and blankets. Today I mainly create jewelry, bags and other accessories. My creations are usually made from fabric and felt and are embellished with embroidery, beads and crocheting. I love to have a needle in my hand and a thimble on my finger and I am delighted when I can create. Even though I paint and quilt for myself - for the challenge and joy of it - I know that visual art must be seen to be heard and true fulfillment comes when someone else unites with my vision and becomes a part of my marks on paper or fabric.

What began as a hobby around 40 years ago soon became an obsession and then a profession as my work began receiving recognition in Juried Exhibitions. This led to gallery representation and purchase by many public and private collectors. Cheered on by my husband, Jim, and our three sons, I participated and sold in quite a few of the major Art Fairs and Festivals. I have been asked to demonstrate and teach many workshops in the United States and Canada. I no longer travel to exhibit and sell, but my work is shown in several galleries, museums and on my web site: www.peggybrownart.com.

Artist's statement: My studio time is divided between "paintings on paper" and my newer obsession, "paintings on fabric." I approach my art quilts from the viewpoint of a watercolor artist and use the same media and methods I used for years when painting on paper.

To begin, I wet the substrate, then freely brush on paint letting the pigments mingle and follow their personal paths as they dry. This process is repeated several times for more depth and richness. After drying the marks on the paper or fabric inspire and help me choose a way to continue and complete the image.

My goal is to take a free-flowing start; and using collage, overlays of more pigment and drawing, compose a well-designed finish. At times, using treated fabric, I make inkjet transfers from my original paintings, then reconstruct the transfers into a new design. I try to express images that are on, above and below the surface. By keeping each painted layer transparent, I invite the viewer to follow as I work and perceive the process from tentative beginnings to the final touch. Some of my beginnings become non-objective abstracts, some become landscapes or still life.

As long as I can remember I have loved being creative. When I discovered art quilting a whole world opened up to me. The reason I enjoy it so much is that I can use so many different techniques and materials.

I prefer painting and printing my own fabrics. I do so by layering colour on to white fabric in order to achieve depth. I dye, print, stamp, discharge etc. Besides art quilting I enjoy using other ways of expression. I like working on paper, needle felting, embroidery, encaustic, and many more things.

Artist's statement: Inspiration for my work comes from within. I pick some fabrics from my stash and start straight away or I leave them lying on my worktop for a while and consider several options. As soon as I get an idea in my head I start out and keep working on it until it ‘feels good’ to me. Most of the time when I am working, I listen to music, classical or contemporary. I am no doubt subconsciously inspired by this music.

I thoroughly enjoy making my art. I couldn’t do without.

Artist's statement: Sculpting a portrait in wet cheesecloth is a slow process, and in the act of creation, I develop a relationship to the figure as I work on the features and contemplate the line of a mouth, a raised eyebrow, creases around the eyes. I founded Doughty Designs in 1991 and have been creating commissioned work in the textile medium ever since. From 2002-06 I was a regional co-representative for Studio Art Quilts Associates and am now the Website Coordinator. I have taught and lectured on various aspects of art quilts in several states. Artist's statement: I love the concept of ""place"" and so my preferred subject matter is the landscape. Often my inspiration (and sometimes even my materials) comes from the trees I know so well, in my own yard and neighborhood. Currently my work focuses on exploring what makes fiber art so unique: texture, freedom of shape of the ""canvas,"" and employing three rather than two dimensions.

Love of color, the sense of translucent depth and the surprise of the unexpected have fueled my re-entry to dyeing silk. I have spent the last few years working with a variety of printmaking techniques prior to succumbing to the urge to once again make textiles. The images are produced through a variety of resist printmaking and direct painting techniques using dyes and discharges. The richness and variety of silk surfaces, sometimes combined with stitching and fusing, is endlessly fascinating to me.

I learnt to dye my own fabrics and threads when studying for my City and Guilds level 3 diploma in Embroidery. I loved using them so much that I decided to sell some of them to other like minded people.

I now dye a variety of cotton fabrics, viscose/wool felt, embroidery threads, silk carrier rods and lace to sell to other embroiderers and textile/fibre artists from my shop on Etsy. I find the combinations of colours which occur during the dyeing process, absolutely fascinating and always get a thrill when I see the results of a dyeing session!

Artist statement: The colours of my fabrics and threads are one of the inspirations for my own embroideries. I am also fascinated by vintage textiles and embroidery techniques, such as 'broderie anglais', and am exploring contemporary ways of using traditional methods. I prefer hand embroidery, but am challenging myself to use more free machine embroidery, and also enjoy patchwork and quilting.

I belong to a group of textile artists called NINE, and am currently working towards an exhibition inspired by the sculptures in the Gibberd Garden in Harlow.

Working with wool rovings set me on a journey that started by learning to wet-felt a perfectly round, solid bead. Soon, I was stringing beads together into jewellry, and adding embellishments, incorporating single needle felted yarn as well as glass and metal beads.

Graduating to flat felting allowed me to incorporate my old embroidery and crewel techniques. Every creation has taught me something new, both technically and aesthetically. I now find myself thinking in terms of much bigger pieces, incorporating more detail and other materials.

Through this new group of gifted artisans I hope to gain the encouragement and mentorship I need to progress to the next stage in this wonderful uncharted adventure.

Artist's statement: Like so many others, I was brave and comfortable about my creativity when I was younger, but misplaced that understanding as I became an adult. A diagnosis of cancer re-ignited my passion through a wonderful program called Art as Medicine, offered by our regional cancer care facility to patients, health care professionals, and their supporting friends and family. I had been a professional musician, and re-discovered my love of singing through the vocal music program, but also my love of creating things with my hands. I am deeply involved now in building a cancer wellness and support facility called Wellspring that will supplement our overburdened cancer care system, where I hope to help others touched by cancer to express their feelings through arts-based programming.

Artist statement: Celebrating memories with a glimpse of a personal relationship and natural daily life exemplifies my work. My goal, when executing a piece, is to bring a photograph to life, not just recreate the image.

With each batik fabric differing, the tangled pattern is always a mystery. The irregularity of batiks lends itself to the shapes I use in my layering technique. Variances in pattern cause shadow and highlight, giving my work its characterizing appearance. The threadwork blends the stitching around the edges.

Whether it’s a couple sitting at a waterfront, an old man reading his bible, or a family portrait, I enjoy capturing a moment. I use photographic references to create representational portraits of an occasion among friends, a glimpse of a relationship and natural daily life, or a celebration of family; my artistry presents memories.

I create one of a kind, original art fabric hangings using hand-dyed silk and a variety of fabrics. Some of my images are quilted fabric collages while others are quilted silk paintings. I am inspired by the pristine beauty of Saturna Island with it’s vistas of shore, mountains and forests. I see the arbutus, fir and cedar trees swaying in the wind as akin to my dance and fantasy images as everything is in motion striving for freedom from gravity. My hangings are richly machine embroidered. The artwork can be displayed in my own open box frames, hung with a custom made hanger, doweling and picture hooks or framed with museum archival matting.

Artist statement: Hi, my name is Donna-Fay Digance. My background is in painting and printmaking. When I moved to this pristine west coast island, I wanted to work with more eco-friendly materials. I’ve always loved the colour, textures and patterns of fabric so now I use a variety of commercial fabrics combined with my own hand dyed and painted silk and cottons. The intricate cutting of the shapes, arranged in many layers and quilted, combined with drawing, painting and machine embroidery, helps me create this uniquely individual collection of work. Living on Saturna Island inspires me to try and capture the beauty and serenity of nature that surrounds me in this pristine, tranquil oasis.

I love colors and whatever possible colors can go into a creation. I sell supplies on Etsy and started out with yarns, then moved into silk sari ribbon, silk cocoons, silk sari ribbon yarns, cording and rope. I will recycle saris and rip them into a ribbon and then create by knitting or crocheting it into something wonderful. If I can't find a color I need I will dye it using environmentally safe dyes.

I found a fair trade supplier in India who is now working on ribbons and silk thrum yarns for me. I decided that it would be nice to share this love and supply that I have on Etsy and it has really taken off, leading me to meet other wonderful artists. Sitting at the table, I think back, never in my dreams imagining that I could share this with others and have it grow into a live business as it has.

I make purses, accessories and clothing that are out of the ordinary. When you work with fibers and silk sari ribbon you step outside of the box!

My name is Georgianne Holland and I am a fiber folk artist living and working close to the Rocky Mountains near Boulder, Colorado. The fluid surface of the silk dares me to play with its shifting textures. The fibers hold and release the tropical colors of my childhood in their own quixotic alchemy. From the sheer transparency of silk chiffon to the deeply-plied silk charmeuse, each fabric takes the precious French dyes from my brush like a willful child.

Once you’ve touched your brush to the silk, you are committed. Whether it is wall décor or clothing, there is no changing your mind, no backtracking. Brush, dye, silk … the path is unforgiving. My name is Peggy Wright. I am passionate about fibers, beads, and color in whatever form, and I love both hand and machine work. I am a textile artist from St. Paul, Minnesota. I make both functional and art textiles, hand painted in the Japanese tradition of katazome (paste resist stencil dyeing), using a palette of natural pigments and dyes on linen, cotton, silk and sometimes paper. My work celebrates daily meetings with the wild birds, plants, and lake breezes of my local urban surroundings.

My decorative and functional works (i.e. pillows and runners) are created in small batches, and each item is a unique variation of my original design. I also create one-of-a kind katazome works for the wall. In addition, I am open to custom commission work. For example, I can work with homeowners and/or interior designers who want to decorate a home or public space with a unique, nature-inspired art textile.

Artist statement: Natural forms draw me in on daily walks around the small lake near my home. I am captivated by the patterns and cycles I observe in plants, water, birds and seasons. These familiar landscapes, as well as the interior terrain of thought, memory and imagination inspire my work.

Since January of 2009, I have focused exclusively on the materials, tools and techniques of katazome, which inspire me almost as much as my subject matter! The centuries-old technique incorporates elements of both printmaking and painting, and relies on simple non-toxic materials such as rice paste resist, natural pigments and dyes, and soymilk. It is an elegant process with relevance for the contemporary artist who strives to work with a minimum impact on the environment.

I'm a textile artist who has a love of hand embroidery. Not only do I love collecting vintage pieces of embroidery...I love creating new embroidery pieces that I hope will be passed down to other generations. I also enjoy doing research on embroidery and collecting the history of this beautiful handwork.

I initially began creating hand embroidered cuffs, but I have been exploring other artistic mediums utilizing embroidery. Recently I have delved into a 3-dimensional aspect and have been creating pieces based on inventions of the 1800s.

As I explore more of the history of embroidery I gather more ideas on things that I want to create...I have an entire notebook filled with these ideas!

I learned how to do locker hooking from a book. Most of the projects were fabric based, but one used plastic bags. I tried it out with shopping bags. Then I started thinking how I could use the plastic newspaper sleeves that we got every day. Friends, co-workers and family started giving me theirs.

Normal back and forth on the grid got boring and I began planning designs I could create. The bags have a wide degree of variation in density, color and hue so I sorted them accordingly. The ink printed on some of them distracted from my design, so I cut that part out and saved them in case I could use them in another way.

I have a background in interior design and custom draperies, so neatness is very important. My designs are supported by quality work to make the best foundation and finish work on them. The base for most of my designs is 3.5 latch hook canvas. I hem all four sides, paint the background dictated by my design, and bind all edges with the same plastic I’m using in the piece. The back is anchored with either silicone sealer or ModPodge. You can use tiny nail brads in the wall and push the wall hanging onto them. Otherwise you can use drapery rods and rings or have them framed.

In the beginning I thought I was making rugs, but soon my admirers assured me that "No, these should be hung on the wall because they are truly an art." So, my first designs are a bit larger and took quite a long time to make. Sometimes the size of available canvas left from another work will inspire my design, such as the tree and leaves.

I have been doing locker hooking since 2009. I have created about 6 pieces each year. Working around 2 hours a day on them, it takes between 6 weeks and 3 months to complete a piece. To help keep from damaging my body with repetitive motion, I also like to do knitting, crocheting, embroidery punch, jewelry design. Right now I'm growing some cotton for my adventure into spinning cotton for some project in the future.

When I create my art, I try to tap into the calm center of myself and let myself respond to my environment and the materials I work with. I love the rhythm of weaving and stitching. Creating my own cloth feels right, and the challenge of re-creating moments in nature is endlessly fascinating for me. I take time to absorb each piece that I make in all of its stages, until it is complete.

My work is shown in group or solo shows, and I also create special pieces on commission for individuals, businesses, or through art consultants. My process for commissions is personal and rewarding for me both me and my clients. I enjoy learning what it is that people respond to in my work, and what they are looking for in their home or business. Artist statement: In my work, I am interested in the connections between self, place, emotion and time. Seasons, atmospheres and the time of day intrigue me. I try to recreate these natural occurrences, evoking emotions that I associate with them through the use of color, line, and texture.

I use different dye techniques (batik, shibori, color removal, rust print) as well as sewing with my weavings and fabric pieces. I draw lines by stitching with thread. Dimension is added with tucks, layers, or other manipulations of fabric. The lines suggest landscape or other aspects of nature. Most of the techniques I choose to use are very contemplative, encouraging introspection; other processes are spontaneous and unpredictable. I try to find a balance between the two approaches, trying to capture those ephemeral, fleeting moments of time.

Short Bio:
Originally from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Karen Henderson now resides in the beautiful Green Mountain state of Vermont. She learned weaving and print design in the textile design program at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia, PA. Her work has been shown in high-end craft shows and exhibits, and is found in many private and corporate collections. Her work has been published in entitled “1000 Artisan Textiles” , ""The Guild Sourcebook of Residential Art #6"", and in Fiberarts, Surface Design Journal, and Selvedge magazines. Recently, some of her work was used on the set of the award winning movie “Black Swan”.

I work with textiles, specializing in interior decor. I became interested in textiles while working as a set designer at theatres. I create drawings and work them on to various materials, depending on the object. I especially like linen and hemp.

My brand is called “Affaires Nomades” and I got the name from my fascination for the nomadic life. I want to explore the idea of interior design as a reflection on voyages and nature. In this way, the question is how to integrate my drawings on to the fabric by using various methods.

I'm Wendy Mamattah and the owner and CEO of Braid and Stitch and an award winning quilt and fiber artist living in Portland, Oregon. Originally a Journalist from Ghana in West Africa, I have always loved working with fabrics. As a child in primary school , as early as age five, I often received prizes for needlework instead of English or Geography which made me realize that there was a part inside of me that loved to create.

My work continues to evolve in both subject and technique. Recurring throughout in strong, clear color, texture, visual impact, and meticulous detail. I love the colors of the world as it is. I love the colors that can be imposed on the real world to see it in a new way. The world is enlivened not only by color but also by its textures. I want to get in close and observe the nearly hidden textures of all of the creations of nature. I want to climb up high and see the equally hidden textures of the world as a bird might see it. I want to examine the faces and postures of the people who share the world with me.

My current works which display on this website depict a lot of Africa. I love the vibrant colors of African fabrics and the way they pop to the eye when one looks at them. Most of my quilts tell a story, and a lot of my stories represent my African heritage which I carry with me everywhere I go.

My quilts have lots of character and dimension as well as a very unique look which are the differences my choices of fabric make. Beading and painting accentuate my work.

I recently started a pincushion line which I have on my Etsy page, they are called 'Deceptively Yummy Cup Cake Pincushions', a huge 'must have' for sewers, quilters, and hat wearers. Soon I will have a wearable art line which will also be in ethnic vein.

Artist statement: The freedom to express what the mind sees as beautiful, whether constructed in fabric or any other art medium, is an amazing gift. Here at Braid and Stitch we do just that!

I began my quilting life in the mid 1990s when inspired by Alex Anderson on Simply Quilts. I thought, "Why not make a quilt for my son's bed?" I was hooked. Soon my background in art history and the decorative arts led me to leave more traditional quilting patterns behind in favor of a more personal expression. I love the instant response I see when people view my quilts. I believe that art quilts can add so much to a home or office environment and working closely with a client on a commission is one of my favorite modes of communication.

Artist statement: As an artist, I am especially drawn to color and texture which I use to create images in cloth. The natural world, decorative art and architecture all inspire my work. I usually use my own sketches and photographs as the basis for my quilt designs. My work is mostly representational and incorporates multiple techniques including piecing, applique' and textile paints to fulfill my vision. I also use embellishments: hand beading, textile trim and yarns. I'm especially interested in free motion machine quilting to add detail, depth and dimension to my work.

My name is Rose Clay. I am a wool artist with a passion for wool textiles, hand embroidery and traditional wool rug hooking.

I enjoy experimenting with color and hand dyeing soft 100% wool fabric. Wool is a natural and renewable resource and handles beautifully with the various techniques I use. I also enjoy the hunt for unique and beautiful woolens. I use a combination of different wool textiles in my designs. I will often use crystals, glass beads and semi-precious stones to embellish my pillows, wall hangings and table runners.

I also design Patterns and Kits that incorporate wool fabric. My designs are original from conception to finished product.

My name is Nicolette Ludvig. I live in Győr, Hungary, in the heart of Europe, halfway between Budapest and Vienna. It is 20 years now that I’ve been exploring the secret of colours. I do sewing, knitting, crocheting… and I’m passionately interested in whatever is made of yarn and textile. Lately, I’ve been enthralled by crocheting circles and varying the colours of the yarn. Then I make these circles into small artifacts: key-rings, brooches, purses, pouches, bags and so on. I use threads not only for knitting and crocheting. I like to twist them into spirals and sew them on to a woolen felt base. Exciting things are born this way right between my hands. My love of fabrics began when I made my own dress for a 7th grade party. Over the years I’ve enjoyed sewing fashion and home dec projects and designing fiber art dolls but my passion is creating textile artwork inspired by the flora and fauna of northern Michigan where every season bring new wonders.

I am fascinated by the interplay of color, form and texture. My artwork sometimes includes tactile elements like beading and layering as well as dimensional components such as wired leaves. I enjoy combining my own hand-dyed and painted fabric with a wide variety of commercial fabrics.

My work has been exhibited in galleries, art centers and at national and international quilt shows; and has been featured in books and magazines. I am a member of, the Charlevoix Circle of Arts, the Crooked Tree Art Center, and the Jordan River Arts Center, and a professional artist member of the Studio Art Quilt Associates.

In addition to my artwork I offer a variety of art workshops including "Creating Strong Compositions" and "Capturing the Muse," as well as several art doll workshops.

Artist's statement: It's the visual and tactile texture of fabric enhanced by the impression made by the stitch that induces me to create art with fiber.

Artist statement: I came to quilt making in the 1990’s with a varied background in fine arts and textiles. A love of fabric made the fiber arts medium an easy choice once I realized that drawing, painting or printmaking skills could be added to quilting. The desire to slow down and feel the cloth beneath my fingers continually nudges me back to my roots in hand work, especially embroidery, which I incorporate into my pieces. I thrive on the unpredictability of the art making process, and find manipulating the fabric surface with paint, water, heat or thread a wonderful way to play. This layering technique stretches not only the cloth’s textural potential, but my creative visualization.

My imagery is inspired by flowing water, the power of the sun, or the interplay between dynamic movement and stillness. Inspiration is linked to being present in the moment. For me, creative practice and meditation practice go hand in hand. Both ground and nourish my journey of discovery. In turn, I delight in sharing what I have learned with others so that they can also open to their unique creative voice.

Artist statement

Inspiration:
My work expresses my interests in nature and the environment. When considering nature, I do not try to copy the natural world as I see it but, rather, as I feel it. Moved by the natural light and organic shapes I observe in the places I visit seeking inspiration, I try to capture in my work the essence and mood of the place as well as to formulate a graphic interpretation of what I see.

My environmental interests derive from the precarious condition of our planet and from my urgent desire to record the environment before it is too late. By recording visually all that inspires me in the natural world, I attempt to document what beauty still exists, perhaps as a legacy for future generations.

I work with handmade paper for two reasons: (1) handmade paper has not been widely used as a painting medium, thus I am constantly discovering its potential and am challenged by its capacities, which allows me to be a pioneer in this exciting medium; and (2) the texture of pulp provides an almost three-dimensional quality to the painting’s surface, thus mimicking nature in all its splendor.

Technique:
My paintings and wall reliefs are created exclusively from fibrous paper pulp: there is no “paint” of any kind on the surface. Each work is pigmented with 100% pure, non-fading, acid-free pigments and is carefully treated so that it can be exhibited with or without glass. My unique process and careful attention to craftsmanship provides a seductive, textured surface that lends itself to the natural subject matter of my work.

Artist's statement: I am quite passionate about my work. I continue to explore my chosen medium, fabric, to see what it can do, to stretch its perception as art medium.

When I work, I encourage a collaborative process with spirit or my higher self, that mind-boggling principle of the universe. This process can also be called ‘flow’. When you are in this state of mind, the intuitive is tapped and the work can become more than the sum of it’s parts. I work out insights, inspirations, feelings and reactions to the outer world. Allowing time for these inspirations to percolate up from my unconscious is a vital part of my process.

Each piece is wrought individually and is one of a kind. These include original photographs, artistically manipulated, printed on prepared fabrics and various textile substrates. The works can include painting, dying, stamping screen-printing, mono printing and other means of surface design. Among a variety of presentations, I created an innovative technique, Holographic Images, employing photographs on silk organza to create a unique 3-D effect.

Layers peeled back reveal the source, the inspiration, and my mad desire to capture thoughts, dreams and the beauty of nature.
